To raise funds for the assistance and welfare of sick and abandoned animals in the Western Algarve.
Nandi is Afrikaans for ´black and beautiful´ in Zulu.
The Nandi charity was founded in 1996 by John and Doreen Piteleen. Concerned about the number of stray dogs and cats in the Algarve, they set up a charity with the aim to raise funds for a sterilisation programme, veterinary treatment, and animal food. They named the charity ‘Nandi’ after their beautiful black dog that came to them as a stray.
Today, Nandi is a registered charity, with two thriving shops close to the Terras do Infante Public Hospital and Intermarché. Both shops are very popular with both the Portuguese and ex-pat communities, as well as holidaymakers.
One shop sells homeware and furniture and the other shop, just next door, is packed full of clothes, bric-a-brac, toys and books.
